Rules
  • The contest is open to pupils from seven (7) to thirteen (13) years old. This concerns school pupils born on or between 1st April 2003 and 31st March 2010.
  • The Junior Skywalker category concerns school pupils born on or between 1st April 2006 and 31st March 2010. The Senior Skywalker category concerns school pupils born on or between 1st April 2003 and 31st March 2006.  The age groups assignments will be determined by each Skywalker contestant’s age on the last day of submission (31st March 2017).
  • Skywalkers submit original pictures they have created individually. The term ‘picture’ can apply to artwork created by any medium either manually (drawing, painting, mosaics etc.) or electronically (photographs, drawings made with computer design programs etc.). Pictures not created electronically must be scanned and uploaded in one of the approved formats.
  • Skywalkers do not compete in teams but must be helped with registration and submission by an adult (teacher, family member or youth leader).
  • Each Skywalker contestant can submit only one picture for the contest.
  • All contestants must submit an original space science picture based on the themes and challenges specified for their age category.
  • Contestants may submit a digital entry from 1st September 2016 to 31st March 2017.
  • All entries submitted must be the contestants’ own work, carried out specifically for this contest.
  • A jury panel of educators, artists and space sector personalities will evaluate all entries and the pictures with the highest mark in the Junior and in the Senior category will win the Grand Prizes for the Skywalkers category.
  • Provided that there will be at least five (5) entries submitted in an EU country for each Skywalkers age group, national winners for Junior and / or Senior Skywalker will be announced for these countries and age groups.
  • Skywalker pictures submitted from non-EU countries will form a single bloc and the best pictures in each age group (Junior and Senior) will be announced as though they formed a single country.
  • Results of the Skywalker category international and national winners will be announced on the award ceremony that will take place in July 2017.
  • Skywalkers in the artwork contest will not participate in regional semi-finals, nor will they travel to the International final in Toulouse.
  • Each participant must provide a signed parental consent form to participate in the contest.
  • Every Skywalker contestant should have an adult (teacher, family member or youth leader) to assist them.
  • A teacher may submit up to fifty (50) pictures from fifty (50) different Skywalker contestants, so long as parental consent is given for each one.

Instructions

Pupils born on or between 1st April 2003 and 31st March 2010 are invited to prepare individually a “picture” that relates to one of the following themes:

Solar System and Space Science

(e.g. How does Earth look from the surface of the Moon and the surface of Venus)

Europe in space

(e.g. Walking on a comet)

03

Human beings on Mars

(e.g. Mars satellite Phobos crashes on Mars)

04

Astrobiology-The search for life in the universe

(e.g. Make a drawing of a civilization that has developed a very high technological standard)

* This list is not exhaustive and any other development of ideas within the framework of the selected themes could be displayed based on the imagination of the pupils.

Their entry must be submitted by an adult (by their teacher, family member or youth leader) online through the Odysseus II website.

Assessment and Selection

In the Skywalker category all submissions will be judged by a jury panel of educators, artists and space sector personalities
Submitted pictures will be assessed based upon the following criteria:

  • Quality of the artistic composition and design (weight factor 30%)
    With this criterion it will be assessed the artistic value of the work and the extent to which the picture is aesthetically enchanting.
  • Originality (weight factor 20%)
    With this criterion it will be assessed the novelty and the extent to which the artwork addresses the topic in an original way.
  • Creativity (weight factor 20%)
    With this criterion it will be assessed the extent to which the submitted artwork is creatively conceived, designed and presented.
  • Overall impression and message (weight factor 30%)
    With this criterion it will be assessed the overall impression of the artwork and the extent to which the picture gives a positive message about human activities in space.

What is Odysseus II?

Odysseus II is a European project, funded by the European Commission.  Its main objective is the organization of a pan-European contest for pupils and students between the age of seven (7) and twenty-two (22) years on Space exploration and Space science. Although a pan-European contest pupils and students from non-EU countries could also participate.

I want to register a pupil in the contest – How do I join Odysseus II?

You can REGISTER a pupil by submitting your email and your selected password in the relevant section of the Odysseus II Contest website.  After entering your email and password you should select the category Skywalkers and accept the rules of the Odysseus II contest.  You must verify your account by clicking to the link that you will automatically receive by email. Then you should LOGIN and fill in your details and the details of the pupil in the form provided.

Do I need to fulfil any additional requirements to register a pupil in the Odysseus II contest?

Yes, the parent or the legal guardian should sign and provide a parental consent form allowing the pupil to participate in the Odysseus II contest and agreeing on the rules of the contest. In order to be eligible a pupil to participate the registration should be done before the 31st of March 2017.

 How old does the pupil have to be to participate in the Odysseus II contest?

Participants on Skywalker category should have been born on or between 1st April 2003 and 31st March 2010.

How do I submit an entry?

You must have registered, then logged in to upload the entry by clicking on the Submit your Entry link.

Can I submit more than one entry?

No, you can submit only one entry per contestant. But you may submit up to fifty (50) pictures from fifty (50) different Skywalker contestants, so long as the parental consent is given for each one. This applies perfectly for teachers with big classes.

What do I do if I forget my password to the Odysseus II Platform?

There is a “Forgot Your Password” link on the Log in page. Click on that and a new password will be sent to your registered e-mail address for Odysseus II account.

When do I have to submit the entry?

You need to submit the entry from 1st September 2016 until 23:59:59 CET of 31st March 2017. The Odysseus Contest II organizers recommend that you submit your entry upon completion without waiting until the deadline date.

 Can you help me uploading an entry to the Odysseus II Platform?

Yes; you should follow the instructions provided in the Submit your Entry link.  If you have any questions or if you need help in uploading an entry, please fill in and submit the contact form and the organizers will help you securing that your entry will be uploaded appropriately.

Can I view the other entries submitted in the Odysseus II contest?

Yes, all entries could be viewed on the Odysseus II website at the Gallery page, after the deadline for submitting an entry.

 How will I be notified if an entry that I submitted will win?

Winners will be announced on the Odysseus II website.

What are the prizes?

The winners for the Junior Skywalkers and the Senior Skywalkers categories, chosen at the International Final, will both receive an iPad tablet with space-related e-books and applications, and a ‘European Youth Space Ambassador’ diploma, sent directly to their home or school.
