Catarina Alves

Portugal

My name is Catarina Alves, I have 20 years old and I am from Portugal. Currently I am studying Physics at University of Porto. My main interests are theoretical and computational Physics, Astronomy and Statistics. I have participated in contests of Math, Physics, Astronomy, Economy, Engineering, Poetry and Literature. I won some and I learned a lot in every one. Presently, I am doing an internship at Centro de Astronomia da Universidade do Porto about Cosmological models for the acceleration of the universe and the variation of the fundamental constants of nature. In my spare time, I like debating, programming and hanging out with friends. I am also a scout

What motivated you most to participate to Odysseus contest?

I love participating in contests, so when I saw one about space (a thing that I love), I decided to participate. Besides that, the prizes were awesome.

What did you enjoy when you prepared your project?

I enjoyed learning new things and the quest to answer the questions we had made. It was also very rewarding see what we got as a result.

What was the most important thing that you learned during the preparation of your project?

I learned that planning ahead is super important. I also learned that sometimes you have to change what you are doing without hesitation when things don’t work out. However, the most important thing I learned was that you have to keep trying and trying and experiment new things if you want to be successful.

Has the work done for your project affected your decision for studies in space science?

Yes. It showed me several things I was not aware they existed. Because of that, I am considering study at master’s level in Astrophysics or doing a master thesis in a related field.
