Daniel Nilsson is a real Space enthusiast. He was the national participant from Sweden at the 2015-2016 edition of the Odysseus space contest. He also participated in the regional semifinals held in Denmark where he won in his category, Explorers, and went on to the finals in Belgium last summer.
Daniel says that the best part of participating in the Odysseus contest was to get the possibility to explore his own ideas and meeting new, inspiring people who could help advance them.
His best advice for new participants is to explore their ideas and practice their innovative capabilities.
He is currently at his last year of space engineering studies at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden.
He won the regional semifinals with his project ‘Safer Firefighting By Using Galileo Data’. The project demonstrates how to use position data from the European Galileo-satellites to ensure more efficient handling of natural disasters like forest fires.
The Galileo system is the European version of the American GPS-system for precise global positioning. Galileo is based on 24 satellites – most of them have been launched – and the system is planned to be up and running in 2020.
The jurors at the semifinals in Denmark acknowledged Daniels concept as being very innovative and stated that Daniel’s project was the “Most professional presentation and most applicable project in the near future”.
