Katarína Žigrajová

Slovakia

I am Katarína, I live in Spišská Nová Ves and I am from Slovakian team The Dreamers. I turned 16 years old in 2016. I participated in ODYSSEUS when I was in primary school, but I am now in high school. Apart from this competition, I competed in a Slovakian annual competition called, “What do you know about the stars?” five times. I was also a member of the astronomy group in primary school for five years, and we did some activities and trips related to astronomy there. Aside from astronomy I also like learning new languages, travelling, playing the musical instruments (I am a member of art school) and playing sports (I am also a big sport fan).

What motivated you most to participate to Odysseus contest?

Well, I wanted to try something new and by making this project to reflect on some problems we have on Earth like polluting our atmosphere or our behavior towards Earth and nature. Perhaps, I wanted to warn people that if we do not stop and reflect, we will destroy everything we have. And the other thing was, of course, amazing prize – a possibility to travel, see new places and meet new people.

What did you enjoy when you prepared your project?

Our project contained a story – which I liked writing with my teammate – that involved creating a whole new world, including creatures and inventions we may use in the future that will help us save our planet. We had so much fun with it.

What was the most important thing that you learned during the preparation of your project?

I learned some new facts. But for me, the most important thing I learned was not about the stars or the space. We can create something of our own, but I learned that if we are more we are stronger. I am so glad that this competition is about teams, because without my 2 teammates I wouldn’t have done anything.

Has the work done for your project affected your decision for studies in space science?

I have not fully decided about my future studies yet, but this has widen my knowledge and maybe it helped me, in some way, realize what I want to do in the future.
