The 2016 Odysseus Contest Final took place from 5th to 8th July 2016, at the Euro Space Center in Transinne, Belgium, under the high patronage of the European Parliament. The Final gathered the top Pioneers teams and Explorers, winners at the national and regional stages, organized during the past academic year.
The 31 Odysseus finalists from 11 countries enjoyed four days full of fun and Space related experiences and engaged in a space science challenge that enabled them to showcase their skills, knowledge and talent. Space mission simulations, astronaut training exercises, lectures about life in space and space industry were only a few of the programme activities. The finalists also visited the Redu ground station of the European Space Agency and the Observatory in Ardennes.
The contestants presented their projects in front of the Jury Panel which had a really hard job to select the winners in both categories.
The winners in all categories, including the Skywalkers, which top entries were decided through on-line voting by all members of the Odysseus community, were announced on Friday 8th July, in the 2016 Odysseus Winners Award Ceremony.
Nine teams, consisting of 21 pupils participated in the 2016 International Final. They came from the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and the United Kingdom and qualified to the final after two rounds of selection at national and regional level.
Students from six countries competed at the final stage of the 2016 contest in the Explorers category.
The 2016 Odysseus contest winners in all categories were announced on the 8th of July in the award ceremony, which took place at the Euro Space Centre.
In the Pioneers Category the winning team was the team LEARS from Portugal consisting of Carlota FERNANDES, Diogo GONCALVES and Nelson REBELO with Ms Cristina PINHO as their teacher – coach. The team comes from the city of Oeiras and they attend the Escola Secundária Sebastião e Silva. They developed a functional wireless guided rover instrumentally setup to analyze new environments.
In the Explorers Category the winner was Ms Alice Antonelli, from Italy. Alice, who lives in Toscany has just graduated from the Liceo scientifico Enrico Fermi and she designed a balloon that goes up into the stratosphere connected with a monowing and carrying as payload some sensors and a photo camera in order to analyse the atmosphere for meteorological purposes and to control air pollution.
